24/08/2011 - NIMET Press Release - MTECH Systems LLWAS Complete at Lagos International

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) Tuesday confirmed successful installation of the Low Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to complement the six Doppler weather radars for real time detection and tracking of hazardous weather. The Director General of NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom told newsmen in Lagos Tuesday that the installation of the device is critical towards improving safety and re-building public confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“MMIA is the largest and busiest airport in Nigeria. On the average, about 240 aircraft land and take off from this airport each day, with a total of 17,000 passengers per day. The successful installation of the LLWAS at this airport therefore represents a significant landmark especially as this is the first time this airport is being equipped with this system. This development has further enhanced the level of safety at this airport,” he said.

The NIMET DG also said the alert system has been installed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja, adding that MTECH Systems would install the system at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) and Port Harcourt International Airport before the end of December 2011.

“The aerial surveys of the two airports, which is a component of the project, have been completed and the installation of the sensors is at an advanced stage of completion at Port Harcourt,” he said.

He attributed the air crashes between 2005 and 2006 to wind shear and stress, adding that with the LLWAS “our weather observatories and forecast offices at the airports are now better equipped and more functional.”
